Ĭardiovascular disease is strongly affected by diet, yet the vast majority of the United States population fails to meet federal dietary recommendations. When comparing sedentary individuals to their more active counterparts, more active individuals tend to consume more healthful foods. Eating food while watching TV, for example, may be distracting and inhibit the body’s ability to signal satiety, and has been associated with lower intake of fruits and vegetables along with higher intake of junk food. Īlong with the adverse health impacts associated with sedentary behavior, prolonged sitting may provide the opportunity to consume food. Over 80% of adults now have sedentary jobs and 70–80% of a typical workday is spent sitting, usually in bouts of 20 min or more. Despite this emerging evidence, sedentary behavior is becoming more common in the workplace. Recent studies suggest that time spent engaging in sedentary behavior impacts health, regardless of physical activity practices. Excessive sedentary time is a contributing factor to many major chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease (CVD), which is the leading cause of death among both males and females in the United States.
